Speaking Engagements

A. K. Snyder is an experienced speaker with a successful history in adult education in many environments, from casual talks in the back room of Barnes and Noble to formal keynotes at professional conferences.

Prepared presentations include:

Writing as Product Development

  • Audience: Adult writers (fiction, nonfiction, published, unpublished).
  • Timing: Originally 2 hours. Can be modified for 1-4 hours.

In product development, there are key process changes that lead to different results. The same is true in software development, manufacturing, professional baking—any profession that depends on the consistent creation of high-quality marketable products.

But in writing, we tend to follow a single process without variation, even if that process leads to poorly formed products or hours of re-writes, writer’s block, and banging our heads against the wall.

During this workshop, we’ll steal process hacks from other industries and apply them to writing. We’ll take specific writing issues and generate alternatives to head banging. Show up ready to play along. We’ll test these theories as a group so you leave with a pile of new tools to try.

Preview the slides.

Tech Skills for Writers

  • Audience: Adult writers (fiction, nonfiction, unpublished, early in career).
  • Timing: Originally 2 hours. Can be modified for 1-4 hours.

You type in Word, research with Google, search the online thesaurus, read books on your Kindle and once in a while read an article from Writer’s Digest. That’s a great place to start, but what else could you be doing if you had a few more tech skills?

  • Use Social Media to build your platform by contributing to the conversation on topics that interest you.
  • Use Pinterest to build characters, visualize settings, and collect writing tools.
  • Use Evernote to capture your great ideas whenever they occur.
  • Use Scrivener to organize your work, juggle scenes, and gauge your progress.

A few simple tech tools can change the ease and speed of your writing. This session will demonstrate the “how” and the “what to click” and the “why bother” of using these tools.

Author Reading and Signing

I am happy to read, sign books, and participate in author Q&A discussions.

Redefining Family: A Birthmother’s Path to Wholeness is a good fit for any event focused on adoption, grief, losing a child, and complex family relationships. Most of the scenes take place in rural Minnesota (Perham, St. Cloud, Wadena).

Turtle Envy is a good fit for any event focused on learning to scuba dive, marriage and trust, handling anxiety, and Florida dive locations. Scenes take place in Florida (Jupiter, Islamorada, Ft. Lauderdale, Lakeland), and Indonesia (Sulawesi, Lembeh, Siladen, Bangka).

What People Say

(On Redefining Family)

Beautifully done. I loved it. Absolutely loved it. I cried and cried and smiled, all mixed up, but my heart feels warm and calm and hopeful of the relationships – for the characters as individuals and as a family unit. It’s just wonderful.

Sarah Hein Graves

I learned a great deal by Alycea’s leadership and aspire to the standards she set by example.

Zach Comm

Alycea is an Architect! Her internal drive for continuous learning and love of research allow her to quickly become a general subject matter expert on any topic.

Karey Jamison

Alycea does what I call “investing” in the learning process, not just by reading a lot but by being a critical thinker when she reads.
